Massage has been proven to increase serotonin (feel good hormones) within the body. This therapeutic interaction can also reduce a major stress hormone (cortisol). Our bodies naturally transition back and forth between two main states of being, the sympathetic and the parasympathetic. Day to day stressors can trigger the sympathetic response for short periods of time but increased levels of stress and/or anxiety can result in a prolonged 'fight or flight' response (sympathetic) which can lead to negative physical and emotional symptoms long term. Massage can help move the body back into a calmer state (parasympathetic) which supports a healthier state of being and can help us find positive coping strategies to find some much needed balance between these two states.
